Goal:
To determine if the efforts of the October 19, 2002 cleanup were
maintained through the winter months in Arizona or if this area was a
collection pool for debris and litter flowing downstream. Additionally we
focused on finding other cleanup locations in the immediate area so we could
institute another cleanup the weekend of Earthday 2003.
Process:
To dive last years cleanup site to visually understand the impact last years
cleanup had on the area. Photograph the site and record and
land and underwater data. Cleanup any additional litter that was found in the
area.
Quantity of divers:
Only two divers on this assignment, Kim and Jay
Results:
The results were very positive. The immediate site that was cleaned
underwater last year remained constant due to the divers' efforts. We found a
few large tree branches that were not in the area last year, but no additional
litter was found. The visibility was very poor due to the lack of river
water flow which was at 9.2 ft3/sec on this day and therefore made
the underwater photo shoot near impossible. We found large schools of carp in the
area and a few small mouth bass.
| Visibility was not great this cleanup |
But we still found 300 aluminum cans |

Additional data:
After seeing the success of the previous years cleanup, we focused
our time in the water on other key areas downstream and found a few
places that needed a
significant amount of help. During this assessment Kim and I pulled out
another 300 beer cans, numerous plastic bottles, bed sheets, glasses and other
items.
Please see the links below for photographs of the litter pulled out of the
river that day.
