Goal for Dive site 1:
Focus our efforts on starting to clean out the large quantity of
aluminum cans and other litter found during the April 19, 2003 assessment of the Sheep's
Crossing site. The location of this site was optimal since it is
located downstream far enough from where Salt River Recreation Tubers are put
into the water. The goal was to start earlier than normal to determine
how much cleanup time could be attained before the tubers would approach
the site
Process:
To dive this key site and remove the litter from the areas using mesh bags and
burlap sacks. Photograph and record the data
on land.
Quantity of divers:
Three team member on this assignment. One land based and two divers
Results:
The results was very good considering the small team of people for the
cleanup. This area has one of the highest concentrations of litter we
have found and will require many cleanup efforts in the future. A total of
548 cans were pulled
from the river at this location among many other types of litter ranging from
lawn chairs to household carpet. Please see the
links below for photographs of the litter pulled out of the river that day.
The visibility was better than in the past due to the increased river
water flow rate, on this day it was at 489 ft3/sec. More suckers and
largemouth bass were spotted and they are becoming more comfortable with us in
the water, they appear to be hanging out to see what we are doing.
We also found a large quantity of crawfish, which seem to be quite appetizing
to the bass ;)
