Goal for Dive site 1:
Focus cleanup on Sheep's Crossing site and exceed the quantity of
litter collected during last month's cleanup. The location of this site
was optimal since it is located downstream far enough from where Salt River
Recreation Tubers are put into the water.
Process:
To snorkel and dive this key site and remove the litter from the areas using mesh bags and
burlap sacks. Photograph and record the data taken from the site.
Quantity of volunteers:
Three team member on this assignment. Three divers and one person
snorkeling
Results:
The results was even better thank expected, a total of 1500 can were pulled
from the river on this day almost tripling
last months cleanup effort. Considering we only increased the
quantity of divers by one person and had one person snorkeling it made a
tremendous difference. We now realize how important it is to have a
person on the surface snorkeling collecting bags as the divers fill them.
This role is a key element in making the cleanups more efficient.
Visibility was better than last month (8-9 feet)but there was a lot of algae
in the river. The
water flow, was at 510 ft3/sec which didn't seem to help much in the
cleanup area. The suckers were out, but there is a growing population of
largemouth bass on our cleanups. They are becoming more
comfortable with us and will hang out in the water (within an arms reach) to
see what we are doing. They are patrolling the area and realize that when
the cans are pulled from the bottom, the crawfish are disturbed and move around
making a them a prime target and a great meal for the fish.
