Goal for Dive site 1:
To help promote the awareness of Earthday 2003 and utilize the data from
the April 6 assessment and focus our efforts on cleaning these areas of the
river.
Additionally we were to planned to assess two other key dive sites that were
expected to have significant amounts of litter collected on the rivers bottom.
Process:
To dive and snorkel these key sites and remove the litter from the areas using
mesh bags and burlap sacks. Photograph the sites to record our data both
on land and underwater.
Quantity of divers:
Seven divers on this assignment
Results:
The results were outstanding and we collected more aluminum cans than we
expected from our initial assessment. A total of 1300 cans were pulled
from the river at this location. There were areas of this site that did
not require the use of scuba and a significant amount of time was spent
snorkeling to remove the cans. Again the visibility was very poor due to the lack of river
water flow, on this day it was at 8.72 ft3/sec. This made the
underwater photo shoot impossible. In addition to schools of suckers and
carp, we spotted more smallmouth bass on this cleanup. Please see the
links below for photographs of the litter pulled out of the river that day.
